Confederate Colonel Scurry looked appropriately shocked yet unflinching. The First Regiment of Colorado Volunteers had drawn a line in the snow of the Sangré de Cristo Mountains at Gloriéta Pass. There were gold and silver mines in Colorado which were direly needed to boost the dwindling Confederate coffers but might now be beyond the Rebels' reach. A little known battle ensued, but its result could have changed the outcome of the Civil War.
